CRASHING AND GPS ISSUES ON ANDROID

We're seeing some issues with Android devices, particularly Samsung, putting extra restrictions on apps that run in the background like Runkeeper. This may result in crashing or not getting location updates while tracking.

There is a possibility that the issue is related to the Samsung operating system’s battery optimization policies, which may be putting the Runkeeper app to sleep while in the background (when your phone screen turns off).

If you're not a Samsung user, try disabling both:

1. Adaptive battery
2. Put apps to sleep

You can do so via this link -- choose your phone type and follow the instructions: https://dontkillmyapp.com/

If you are a Samsung user:

If you’ve been experiencing crashing or GPS interruptions when tracking activities, we recommend making the following adjustments to reduce the restrictions put on the Runkeeper app (Note: Since settings differ by device, some of these options may not be available to you).

Remove the Runkeeper app from the list of apps which will be “put to sleep” if not used for a certain amount of time.

  1. Navigate to your Phone settings
  2. Tap "Device care"
  3. Tap "Battery"
  4. Tap the three-dot menu (top right corner) and select "Settings"
  5. Tap "Sleeping apps"
  6. Remove Runkeeper from this list if it is on it.

Add Runkeeper to the list “Apps that won’t be put to sleep.”

There are two potential ways you may do this, depending on your device.

Option 1

  1. Navigate to your Phone settings
  2. Tap "Device care"
  3. Tap "Battery"
  4. Tap the three-dot menu (top right corner) and select "Settings"
  5. Tap "Apps that won’t be put to sleep"
  6. Add Runkeeper to this list if it is not already on it.

Option 2

  1. Navigate to your Phone settings
  2. Tap "Device care"
  3. Tap "Battery"
  4. Tap "App power management"
  5. Tap "Apps that won’t be put to sleep"
  6. Add Runkeeper to this list if it is not already on it.
Alternate text

Remove the Runkeeper app from the list of “optimized” apps.

  1. Navigate to your Phone settings
  2. Tap "Applications"
  3. Select the three-dot menu (top right corner) and tap "Special Access"
  4. Tap "Optimize battery usage"
  5. Make sure that Runkeeper is not selected.

Note: After adjusting these settings, you may receive a notification from your operating system that Runkeeper is using excessive battery. Our internal testing has not indicated any serious battery strain, so we recommend checking the app’s actual battery usage statistics in your device settings to be sure. GPS tracking does require more power consumption than most apps, but if you keep your phone screen off while tracking, this should not be a concern.

We hope that adjusting these settings prevents the Runkeeper app from going to sleep while in the background; however, if you continue to experience issues, please reach out to our Support team by emailing support@runkeeper.com.

We appreciate your patience and we will continue to look for solutions so we can provide you with the best tracking experience possible!
