There is a possibility that the issue is related to the Samsung operating system’s battery optimization policies, which may be putting the Runkeeper app to sleep while in the background (when your phone screen turns off).
1. Adaptive battery
2. Put apps to sleep
You can do so via this link -- choose your phone type and follow the instructions: https://dontkillmyapp.com/.
If you’ve been experiencing crashing or GPS interruptions when tracking activities, we recommend making the following adjustments to reduce the restrictions put on the Runkeeper app (Note: Since settings differ by device, some of these options may not be available to you).
Remove the Runkeeper app from the list of apps that will be “put to sleep” if not used for a certain amount of time.
- Navigate to your Phone settings
- Tap "Battery and Device care."
- Tap "Battery"
- Tap "Background Usage Limits"
- Uncheck “Put unused apps to sleep”
- Remove the Runkeeper app from these lists:
- Sleeping apps
- Deep sleeping apps
Add the Runkeeper app to the list “Apps that won’t be put to sleep.”
There are two potential ways you may do this, depending on your device.
Option 1: (On older Android versions)
- Navigate to your Phone settings
- Tap "Device care."
- Tap "Battery"
- Tap the three-dot menu (top right corner) and select "Settings."
- Tap "Apps that won’t be put to sleep."
- Add the Runkeeper app to this list if it is not already on it.
Option 2: (On newer Android versions)
- Navigate to your Phone settings
- Tap "Battery and Device care."
- Tap "Battery"
- Tap "Background Usage Limits."
- Tap "Never sleeping apps."
- Add the Runkeeper app to this list if it is not already on it.
Remove the Runkeeper app from the list of “optimized” apps.
- Navigate to your Phone settings
- Tap "Apps"
- Tap “Runkeeper”
- Tap "Battery”
- Set to unrestricted
Note: After adjusting these settings, you may receive a notification that the Runkeeper app is using an excessive battery from your operating system. Our internal testing has not indicated any serious battery strain, so we recommend checking the app’s actual battery usage statistics in your device settings to be sure. GPS tracking does require more power consumption than most apps, but if you keep your phone screen off while tracking, this should not be a concern.
We hope that adjusting these settings prevents the Runkeeper app from going to sleep while in the background; however, if you continue to experience issues, please reach out to our Support team by emailing support@runkeeper.com.
We appreciate your patience, and we will continue to look for solutions so we can provide you with the best tracking experience possible!
