Ghost Running

Ghost Running is the ability to select a previous run before you begin your activity and essentially run against yourself with audio cues if you're falling behind or running ahead of your previous activity. Here at RunKeeper HQ we love this idea!

What kind of features would you like to see in a ghost running experience? For example, would you only like audio cues or do you also want a visual representation of where you are? Do you want to only compete against your past runs or also your friends' runs? How would this feature help your overall fitness?

Hey guys!

We've loved reading through all of your comments and have taken this feature into very serious consideration! After doing some extensive research into the implementation & potential use-cases of this feature, we have ultimately decided to sideline this feature, for now.

Rest assured that this doesn't mean you'll never see ghost running in the Runkeeper app, this just means that for now we will be focusing on bringing you some other really awesome features & updates! Stay tuned :)

I like this feature! For me audio feedback is most important, and first of all I want to compete with my own previous runs, but it would also be cool to race against my friends previous runs.

And to answer how this would help my overall fitness - Well, since I'm competitive when it comes to exercise and training this would defenitely be a motivation booster, which would help me add that extra effort during my runs.

I'm in favor of ghost running. I guess it would be an option if a certain route were chosen, correct? Or would it be for a set distance on any route? I would want the option of turning the feature on/off, since it's not ideal for me to try for a PR every time I run. Audio cues are most important during the run, but a visual overlay graph comparing fastest and current run would be cool to view later...very similar to what rk has now with comparing runs of similar mile ranges, just specific to a certain route/distance. Thank you!

This would be particularly beneficial on my interval training activities. But don't restrict it to Running - I can't think of an activity where it wouldn't be relevant. The main feature is picking a 'route' that you've already defined before you start the activity. Then a screen that shows time and distance you are ahead/behind. This would be more useful again if you were able to manually set the splits in that route. So I might set a split after 15 minutes warm up, then one after an 8 minute climb, and so on. In this manner, the app would reset it's display when a particular split started otherwise on a bad day you'd be demotivated as you fell further behind.

I would enjoy this feature as well. I think you could be very creative with the audio cues. I was think of a proximity alarm. It wouldn't have to be constant, but you could fire it of every minute or two for a few seconds. The cue types should be configurable.

An absolutely fantastic idea with audio cues for ghost running as I always try to PB and I think this function would be of great help overall

I like the idea of ghost runner support as well.

The app that I used previously to RunKeeper had this feature. It was tied to their equivalent to "routes" and would tell you if you were ahead or behind your best or worst or median times at the same time it provided normal feedback. So, for example it would provide my time and distance and then would tell me "ahead of best by xx seconds" or "behind median xx seconds." I'd be fine with it tied to the normal audio cues and don't think I'd care to have any further control over it like others have suggested.

An option in addition to normal audio cues would be a proximity beeper.
If you are ahead by a set distance then you hear nothing, as you slow down and the ghost is catching up a slow beeping starts. The closer the ghost is the faster the beeping until you have been overtaken where the tone changes (and/or a message says you are not behind).

This would give you the immediate feedback to push harder when you need to.

Previous activities are rarely ideal, so it would be great when you could smoothing-up or modify a previous run a bit and set that as your ghost run.

I would LOVE this feature! I run 5K's and would enjoy hearing how far away from my last runs pace I am. It would definitely help PR the next race by adding this. Great idea!

This is a great idea and I agree with most posts. Audio would be the most useful. I really never look at my screen during a run anyway. I suppose if you were walking and could see a live graph like you see when you compare two runs, that might be nice.

I would love this feature! Great tool for motivating oneself.

In my case audio cues would be absolutely sufficient. Also, the option to compete against friends runs would be nice to have, but is not a must.

A brilliant idea! It's great to break your own record and set a new one; a feature helps to see how you get better.

Fascinating -- I just started running, so I could imagine wanting to push myself by competing against my own records.

Yes, it would be awesome. Especially with friends on the same.... fitness level. That's what I call competition! :-)

Ghost for cycling also ! I want to improve my routine and I see no better motivation !

Summary of my dream:

  • Feature Selection
  • Choose an activity type (as usual)
  • Go in Session tab
  • Select "Ghost race" (doesn not exist yet)
  • Select the activity you want to compete against
  • Start !

*Feature while using it
- Informed on same basis as usual (km or 5 min)
- You get informed if you are off-track
- You get informed how many sec you are ahead or behind the selected activity

As a customer, I could have paid Elite only for this...

Waiting for this feature for a long time as other apps already have it. I would also like to have the map position of myself in the previous run.

I would like to compete against a constant pace ghost.
Audio cue could be "you are X [seconds|minutes] [in front of| behind] the ghost"

It should be an extra setting to allow one a virtual paces for all the activities without disrupting competitions or training runs, for example.
