Different Running Activity Types

We've heard quite a few suggestions about adding the ability to track 'trail running' activities. We just want to gather a bit more information on what you would use this activity type for.

For example, do you want to be able to view your historical stats based on terrain? Or perhaps you'd like to reflect different calorie values for different types of running? Are there other types of running activities you'd also like to distinguish?

Let us know what kinds of running activity types & what you would use them for in the comments!

I would like to see features like being able to select strides, tempo or interval runs outside of a training plan.

I do a lot of OCR racing and would like that as an option.

I would want this feature only as a subgroup of running, meaning that I would still want to see total running stats, but would like to have the option to see stats in subgroups of trail, road, and track runs. I know we have the option of using programmed or personally created interval runs (tempo, speedwork, etc), so it would also be interesting to compare runs based on long distance slow, tempo, and speed work.

Just trail running. I think it'd be interesting to specifically look at how my performance on trails has improved over time. Agree that the algorithm should take elevation/climb/terrain into account and give a more accurate caloric burn reading.

For me it's just that I saw the trail running category lacks - while other possibly even more specific activity types were present.

The main benefit I could think of is being able to filter through your different type of activities - but I think the main reason I suggested it was a bit of OCD :)

Thanks for asking and keep up ze good work :)

I would very much like to differentiate between trail and "road" running, since there is a lot of difference in my opinion.

Also it would be very practical to be able to differentiate between interval sessions and non interval sessions.

For me it's importnt to distinguish based upon terrain. If I run a route on a track/road, and then run another route where everything is similar except instead of roads it was on trails through the woods my time would be greatly increased. Of course like everything else on your app it would be up to the user to define what is trail vs street running.

I would like to be able to easily distinguish these two types of runs.

Adding the ability to select the type of terrain would be great! (trail, road, etc.). I believe there is a large difference in calorie burn based on the terrain type.

Since both speed and calory consumption differs from ordinary running (aprox 10% drop in speed and 10% more calorise burnt) it would me nice to have it as a own activity type.

Lots of fancy stuff is possible. But, at least please add a separate category now for "trail running," similar to ismoothrun. I would like to keep my road running and trail running separate.

I would like to see a subgroup of running also, so I could track overall running stats, but also trail, OCR, street, and so on (whatever categories you would put in, there are an infinite number and every user would most likely have their own personal list that applies to them).

My trail running pace is so different from my road pace that it would be really nice to have two separate categories to choose from.

Seems more sensible to me NOT to create different subgroups, but to increase filter options based on gear/speed/altitude. Maybe a simple tag system would suffice? Not to diminish trail running, but lets honour those who don't.
I've seen someone running a marathon while dribbling with a ball:

I have seen ultramarathon runners on woodn shoes:

What about those who train for the transvulcania on la palma? To call that trail running..
And those performing a triathlon, should be able to log an activity, and change gear without starting a new activity.

I'm not too fussed about logging terrains because I'm usually running on the same. But it would be useful to tag runs as long, race, interval, hill, etc like you can in Strava. When i look at my pace charts in Insights I want to see a steady improvement for my long runs, but interval sessions in between make the line zig-zag all over the place. If I could filter by run type then I can just focus on the long runs, or races and see how Im really improving.

At the moment I have multiple routes setup to try and achieve this - e.g. 5 mile sprint, 5 mile slow for the same course just so I can filter.

Want to record activities on some sports where GPS is not used but where duration of efforts and heart-beat is important to follow: Tennis, Badmington, Squash, ...
Can this list of choises be added?

I would love to see this, many other apps support it as a separate activity. If it can be subclassed from running yet be able to seperate the stats for road vs trail that would be fine. all stats should be able to be separated by run type.

I walk or run on trails more than 90% of the time. Terrain is very important to my workouts. Calculations based on terrain, distance, pace, etc would be greatly appreciated. I noticed that I can go faster and not burn as many calories. It seems that the calculation is based on time not work. I walk on different trails with differing effort. Its hard to know if I am getting better if the route calculations are not based on the route.

I would very much like a trail running activity type. My pace is greatly reduced but my calorie burn is increased when I trail run. I'd like to be able differentiate my road runs from my train runs and see how I've improved with each.

To differentiate between trail running and road running, I currently log my trail run's under hiking. It would be good to have trail running as a separate activity.

It would be nice to be able to separate the two because your run pace different. More obstacles and changing terrain on the trail runs compared to road runs. Thank you for considering it! :-)

Also posted this under "different activity types" but realize it might fit in better here!

I would like to be able to choose "Stroller Walk" or "Stroller run". Since there's quite a lot of parents out there bringing their babies and children with on their exercise rounds. Since a stroller adds quite a few kilos to the work out (mine weigh about 15 kg + baby) I think it would be a great option to be able to choose. To add an extra feature to it there could be a box for adding numbers of kilos for stroller when signing off from the activity.

I want to be able to track trail running and road running because my times are very different. The differences really "muddies" the "water" regarding tracking my progress on either. For example, if I'm preparing for a long trail race I'll be running trails more and my times will go down (for all running) and if I'm preparing for a green way/road race and I'm running on blacktop then my times will get much better. As a whole it's difficult to see if I'm really improving or not (as I can't separate the activities). Please help. Tracking the terrain would be nice too but the elevation change is most important for me and that's already a part of the software.

Can this list of choises be added to the list of activities? These sports are more efficient, in aerobics terms, than others listed as yoga and meditation, for example.
The squash is considered a physical activity that burns more calories in the same period of implementation ...

It would be great to be able to differentiate between different running styles. As some of the other answers already point out, trail running is very much different than track or road running.
A first step would be just to add it as different activity or a subgroup of running - both would be fine, but it would definitely help to be able to separate them for evaluation purpose, since the speed and the progress in both activities is very different.

Your question is from Feb 2015. There is obviously much interest in the feature. What's taking so long?
